Mandy uses iconic British wild animals such as deer, hares, foxes, owls and wolves as an inspirational starting point to teach you to make a textile collage which will be built up on to a base of a vintage quilt fragment.
You will learn to use slow and traditional hand sewing techniques in a new way to make a unique textile narrative. Mandy is a Textile Artist from Northumberland and has recently published a book called “Textile Collage” and will be sharing some of those techniques in this workshop which will encourage you to take a freer approach to applique.
Join Mandy for a day spent building up a unique textile picture of your own woodland animal or bird.
Mandy will provide many images and samples to inspire you but you are welcome to bring your own image to work from, Mandy will help you realise you picture into a hand stitched fabric collage.
You do not need to draw as Mandy will provide templates but if you bring your own image you may need to make your own with Mandy’s guidance.
Learn how to layer tiny pieces of fabric, how to attach and blend with stitch. There will be plenty of demonstrations and you will have fun learning Mandy’s techniques.
What to Bring
Your sewing kit – needles, pins, scissors, an un-picker
Fabrics – small pieces of fabrics of the colour of woodland animals. eg. If you are doing a deer or a hare you might bring a selection of browns, creams, beiges etc.
If you are doing a squirrel or fox terracotta’s, reds, oranges, black. Synthetics work too with this technique but not heavy weight weaves. pretty prints such as Liberty can also be incorporated.
An image if you don’t want to use one of Mandy’s.
Mandy will provide a piece of vintage quilt as a background on which you can work.
